“Heroes” Vineyard has two distinct but linked wine labels.
The “Heroes” label is for the wines produced from their original 10-acre vineyard, located in the Otways and planted in 1998, while the Anti-Hero label covers wines made from fruit sourced elsewhere.
“Heroes” was named after the David Bowie song of the same name – the quotation marks are used both in the song and on the label to indicate a degree of irony. There is sometimes a certain triumphalism in the wine industry, and the name is partly a mockery of itself and other winemakers. However, the label also features subtly embossed raindrops, which could represent a real hero for the winery, as the region’s natural rainfall is essential to the non-irrigated and organically run vineyard.
Anti-Hero acts as the winery’s second label and is also meant to be a bit tongue-in-cheek. A typical anti-hero is usually a character who is essentially a ‘good guy’ that you root for, but who may lack the usual idealism or other characteristics of your typical hero. It shows the original label being defaced by graffiti – the characters are the winemaker’s children.
